Sulfamethoxazole is a prescription medication used to treat or prevent infections of the respiratory tract. It works by stopping the growth and multiplication of microorganisms, thereby helping to clear up your respiratory system and prevent further infections. Your doctor will determine the best course of treatment for you.
Sulfamethoxazole is also prescribed for the prevention and treatment of certain types of bacterial infections (such as pneumonia).
In some cases, you may experience side effects that are similar to those of your condition, such as:
Sulfamethoxazole should be taken with a full glass of water.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
For most infections, your doctor may recommend using an antibiotic such as trimethoprim to kill the bacteria that cause infections. It can be difficult to determine the effectiveness of trimethoprim against bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. You should follow your doctor's instructions for taking this medicine and keep your medicine out of the reach and sight of children. It may be helpful to take the medicine with food or milk to help reduce the risk of stomach upset. Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice as they can affect the efficacy of trimethoprim. Talk to your doctor about any concerns you have about side effects from your medicine.
Sulfamethoxazole is available as generic products and as a prescription medication. The most common brand names for this medication are trimethoprim (Bactrim, Septra, others) and Septra (Trimethoprim, Septra). You may need to use a different brand name for these products.
